The European car mechanic in Singapore. Ah John!

Before reading this article, I urge reader to look at the comments too. Altought I write this article based on my best knowledge of John, there are people which encountered very bad experience of him. I also started to doubt myself about him. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I fully agreed with the information provided by the comment. It is just that every driver encountered bad workshop... I mean who hasn't. So you are absolutely right to read very thing in the internet with a pinch of salt.

When it comes to brand like Citroen, Renault, Opel cars, drivers in Singapore have a goosebumps all over the body. The repair cost can be a nightmare for most. Lucky for me, I found John. I bought a Renault Kangoo van back in 2006 and got myself in pretty deep shit. The previous owner did not really take care of it and the van is always in constant troubles. I had been to a few workshops and didn't got the problem solve, until I googled in the internet and read some forum posts about John.

On my first visit to John's workshop in Sin Ming industrial park, upon pulling up on the shop's car pouch, the first word he said was,"Your clutch plate is fucked up!". I was like WTH... I told him no way because I bought this van less than a year and the dealer changed a new set of clutch plate for buying the van. He asked why am I so sure about it and I told him the old clutch plate is still tossed behind the van. He took a peek and burst into laughter. He say I have been conned as Renault clutch set come with the housing and stuffs. The old clutch plate lying behind my van was probably from some diesel Japan van or mini lorry. My mind was contradicting about this man that I just met. Is he really that good? I asked myself. Just by listening to the sound when I drove up the 3% gradient sloop he diagnosed my van?

I told him about my problem of engine under power and occasionally lack of "breathe". He popped the bonnet and burst into another laughter. He explain that the diesel filter for this model comes with the sensor and control by the ECM. My van, according to him, has been swapped for a Isuzu 10 footer lorry diesel filter. The diesel did not goes through a compression before sending into the chambers. He also ask me how the hell I'm able to drive this for the pass 4 months. I was pretty embarrassed by his comment but definitely not offended.

After couple of hours my van was ready. The price was a relieve as I prepared $1200 and the whole repair including clutch set, a full servicing and the whole diesel filter set replaced with wiring. It came up to be a bit more of $600. He guaranty a new driving experience and true enough, I felt a great responsive engine beneath the hood. This is John.

Last night I went to seek his rescue again. Now I drove a Citroen C4 and feeling safe knowing I have John within reach. I changed the rear bearing and disc brake kit, did a full servicing of replacing engine oil, oil filter, air filter and the spark plugs, all using original parts. The damages was like $410. Many people will hold back buying a European car in Singapore. So do I. When I first took over the car, the previous owner has spent a bomb on the car with all the receipt intact. It totaled up to near $14k. After 2 years owning this car, I spent less than $1.5k in repairing including a aircon coil, condenser, rear brake disc, battery, etc. All these are possible because I know John.

There is some trade off same as many things beside car maintenance. You see, John is not your regular mechanic. You know he is not for you when,

1) You cannot stand a traditional dirty workshop. If you are the kind that believe dealership like servicing workshop with state of art equipment are only reliable.

2) You cannot take straight answers but preferred customers rights. You have a sick driving habits that caused the excessive wear in parts, don't expect John to beat around bushes to get to the point. He is going to tell you your sick driving habits right in your face.

3) You cannot stand the lack of customers waiting area. He will tell you to F.O to the nearest coffee shop and bring his Kopi O on your way back.

So what is good about John?

He has knowledge and years of experience in European cars. He is not ambitious and believe making enough is enough. He even show me his invoice to buy my parts from stockist and tell me he mark up 10% for profits which I feel it is very fair. He always have the habit of saving for customers, things that don't need to be replace, he will ask you to use it until next servicing. He also work till late night perfect for people that could not afford to take leave from work during the day.

Ah John, refusing to take a picture. You can call him at 9789 6715

  1. Did John pay you to write all these BS?

I have known John for over 10 years and he was my mechanic. Over the years his business gets better and he becomes arrogant. He is bad tempered and scold his customers whenever he is in a bad mood. I have recommended a few car owners to him and all of them have left him. I found out from them later is that they cannot stand his bad temper.

He thinks that he is too good that he does not want to listen when you try to describe to him the problem with your van. Without any trouble shooting he will just ask you to change the battery. The next day when you go back as the problem is not resolved he would ask me to change the alternator and when that does not work he will as you to change the starter. In the end you spend a hugh sum of money changing parts that does not contribute to the problem.

He is dishonest. He would use some old parts that he get from the junk yard and pass it of as reconditioned part. I have let him overhaul my gearbox and clutch and it last only 20,000 KM and I have to get it overhaul again by another workshop. When the other workshop open up the gearbox he told me that the gearbox has never been overhaul before by looking at the gasket you could tell that the gasket has never been change before.

Before my gearbox gave me problem after being done by him I also let him do a top overhaul of my engine. Later my engine need another top overhaul in less then a year.

He knows his stuff but I think he starts to get dishonest by using some parts he got from the junk yard or using some cheaper parts that is why his repair does not last very long.

If you are sending your van for him to service he might change parts that are not necessary as he does not know how to trouble shoot electrical problem. For major repairs beware he might use some cheap parts on your van and resulted that you have to send your van back to the workshop again after a short period.

All that I have written are truth. I do not want to damage someones livelihood. But enough is enough. I have since go to another mechanic.

Good luck to you if you are sending your van to John.

  2. Wow... that's is pretty strong comment you have there... I have my rights to write whatever I deem fit and it's your right to call it BS, but to accuse that I took money from him to write this article is a bit off. Anyway, it's more than a year since I last met him. Maybe you are right and I'm wrong. You wrote the truth and so do I. I will keep this article and your comment too. Let the reader decide. Since you found an even better workshop, are you recommending it to our readers?

This article only harvested a few thousand views since written 18 months ago. Thank you for your comment Mr. Unknown

  3. Sorry if my words sounded too strong.

After I have submitted my comments I realized that maybe
you have not known John long enough to see his true character.

He has been my mechanic for more than 10 years until I have
enough of his bad temper and dishonest dealings.

On two occasions when I questioned him on why the alternator and starter that
are supposed to be reconditioned so dirty. With my alternator and starter removed on the floor he told me that if you don't want you can go to another workshop.A reconditioned part should be one that has been serviced (wear and tear parts changed) and the unit tested. In his case he got the parts from
some scrap van and try to sell me as reconditioned one.

On one occasion I have to have my van tow to his workshop several times because
my van cannot start. It is an intermittent problem. He did not do any trouble
shooting and assume that the battery is bad. After changing the battery I have
to tow my van to his workshop a few weeks later. He change my alternator and
a few weeks later change my starter. In the end he discovered that it is the cable that connects the battery to the van body that is causing the intermittent problem. He could have checked my battery to find out whether my battery condition is good or bad instead of just changing it. He could have checked my alternator to see if it is charging my battery. For electrical
problem he does not have the tools to check and knowledge to systematically narrow down the problem. His method is to change this part and if it does not work change another part until all the parts are changed and it cost you a bomb.

Although he is knowledgeable but if he is dishonest you cannot trust him with your van. He overhaul my clutch twice. The first time it lasted 60,000KM. The second time it lasted only 20,000KM. I have a good driving habit and actually
I expected that I need only to overhaul my clutch only once until my vehicle is scrap. He must have use some cheap parts that he got from the junk yard. My original clutch lasted me more than 200,000 KM. When I send my van to another workshop to repair my clutch the flywheel oil seal leak which John stated in his invoice that he has changed. How can the oil seal leak after only 20,000KM.
The gearbox was not overhaul but he charges me for it. I was told by the other workshop that the gearbox has never been overhaul before because the gearbox gaskets are very old.

John change for me the cylinder head gasket when it leaks. After only 8,600km the gasket leaks again.

I have been to one workshop after I have decided to leave John but I am not ready to recommend that workshop as I have only deal with it once. I know it is difficult to find a good knowledgeable mechanic who are well verse in European van but it is important to find one that is honest and does not try to cut corners to gain a bigger profit.

If you are sending you van to John do not trust him fully. That is my advise.
No offense for my earlier comments I apologise for it.

  4. As for marking up on spare parts. I know mechanics get a discount from the parts dealer and he mark up again. He did not make only 10% from the spare parts. The next time you can find out the price of the spare parts from one of the renault parts dealer and compare with his price. I remember once he charged me for a part $200.00 and I later check with the part dealer the original Renault part cost only about $110. Some times he might use OEM parts and charge you original Renault part price. He might show you the invoice of oil filter or air filter which he cannot mark up alot to make you trust him. Later when you are off your guards he will slaughter you without you even knowing that you have been slaughtered.

    1. I feel you bro. I had a far worse experience. He marked up 400% on my parts. So much so that i went to Kian Hua to get it myself

  5. I was like you before thinking that he is honest when he told me that certain parts need not be changed now can wait till the next servicing. I think that he could be very busy and has no time to do it for you at that time.

  6. No no... you are right to voice out your concern and gave fair warning to whoever reading this article. I always believe that as long the comment is not a spam, it will always be beneficial to the readers. Thank you for taking the time to express your view in such details. I also doesn't want to write something on my free time and cost innocent people a hole in their pockets. Btw, are you happen to be KCS member back then? Maybe we met before... LOL

  9. Choosing the right mechanic is tricky. No two mechanics have the same skills and satisfy their clients the same way. That’s because people have different priorities. As you pointed out, he can tend to be a bit abrasive in the way he expresses himself and that may definitely be a turnoff for some. The main thing is that he has knowledge and experience.

  11. I had a similar bad experience whereby John charged me over 4.5k for a full overhaul even though it could have been a top overhaul. I paid astronomical fees for his charges and took over 3 months to get my vehicle done. He is a horrible mechanic. I engaged him from 2012-2015. My last straw was when he tried charging me $350 to change an ignition coil. I was fortunate enough to befriend the boss of Kian Hua (stockist for conti cars). I was referred to Hua Kian auto at Autobay. He was even more knowledgeable. Honest with his trade and allowed me to use my own parts. He did a full overhaul and chatged labour fees of $450. I bought my own gasket. John is just purely dishonest. And i have the receipts to show you his nonsensical pricing.
